A Morning at Harvesters

On Wednesday, August 30th, 14 of our team members had the opportunity to volunteer at Harvesters Community Food Network in Kansas City, MO. This group was composed of both our restaurant and headquarters teams. From administrative assistants to marketing staff, to our president, everyone was excited to pitch in. The Big Biscuit works to stay involved in the community, and this was a great way to do it!

A Little Background on Harvesters

While at Harvesters, we learned more about their mission of feeding hungry people, and how they do it. First, we learned the definition of a food bank vs. a food pantry. Harvesters is a food bank, which means they supply food to food pantries, which then gets distributed to individuals and families in need. Next, we saw the map of the 26 counties across Kansas and Missouri that Harvesters distributes to. This broad network allows for 760 individual pantries to be stocked, helping feed over 226,000 people per month. Eliminating hunger is a big goal, but luckily Harvesters continually works hard to accomplish it.

What we did

While Harvesters has a lot of different tasks volunteers can help with, our team was assisting with the repackaging of fresh produce for a drive-thru style food pick-up. We were split into two teams, Team Onion and Team Sweet Potato. Each team opened 40/50 lb. bags of produce and split them into smaller sacks portioned for families. We worked for two hours and packaged over 2,000 lbs. of produce! There was definitely some friendly competition between Team Onion and Team Sweet Potato….we won’t say who won….(but between us, it was definitely Team Onion ;).

How you can Get Involved in the mission

This was such a great way for us to bond with each other and invest in the community over something so near and dear to our hearts at The Big Biscuit – food!
